# TCGplayer card data: price metrics, condition and printing

How to match TCGplayer cards by game, set, printing, language, foil and condition, and read sale and listing price metrics correctly.

Updated October 24, 2026 · datawebot team

## Match the catalog product before comparing card prices

A card name or artwork alone may match more than one catalog entry. TCGplayer's App FAQ documents filters for printing, language and condition; its Scan & Identify workflow also lets sellers confirm or correct catalog matches. Keep the selected product context with every metric.

| Match field | Preserve | Comparison check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Game and product line | Game, product line, displayed card name and source product URL or identifier when shown | Do not equate the same name across different games or product lines. |
| Set and printing | Set, displayed card/collector number and selected printing | Review the catalog match if the art or frame appears across versions. |
| Language and finish | Displayed language and foil/non-foil or other selected finish | Keep language and finish separate when the source offers separate filters. |
| Condition | Selected marketplace condition and whether the record is a standard or photo listing | Price metrics can depend on selected card versions and conditions. |
| Snapshot | Product or listing URL, source label and capture time | A timestamp without the selected card and filters is not reproducible evidence. |

## Do not merge sales benchmarks, active asks and shipping-inclusive prices

TCGplayer's product-page price guide and seller pricing tools use different labels and scopes. Keep the source label and selected product filters, and distinguish a displayed benchmark from the amount of a specific seller offer.

| TCGplayer measure | Source definition | Interpretation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Market Price | Compiled from recent completed TCGplayer sales and updated as transactions complete. | A source-defined recent-sales benchmark, not a guaranteed value for one physical copy. |
| Listed Median | Median of listed prices for the selected product and page filters. | An active ask distribution; thin supply can differ from recent sale prices. |
| Most Recent Sale | Most recently sold product for the filters applied to the product page. | One transaction; do not treat its capture time as the sale date unless shown. |
| TCG Lowest Listing / TCG Last Sold Listing | Seller pricing guidance defines these using combined Price + Shipping for the lowest live listing or last completed sale. | Seller-tool labels are not interchangeable with product-page Market Price or Most Recent Sale. |
| Market Price Volatility | TCGplayer calculates volatility from sales volume and price spread over 30 days, counting orders rather than individual copies. | Indeterminate volatility means the source reports insufficient sales volume for a score. |

## Use TCGplayer's condition scale as a seller label, not a copy inspection

TCGplayer's marketplace grades are Near Mint, Lightly Played, Moderately Played, Heavily Played and Damaged; it does not sell cards as Mint or Gem Mint. Its standards consider the type and severity of imperfections plus structure, playability and authentication. The listing grade is not an independent examination of the exact card.

| Condition evidence | TCGplayer distinction | Keep in the record |
| --- | --- | --- |
| NM through Damaged | Seller listing uses one of the published marketplace categories. | Original condition label, selected printing and source listing. |
| Foil | Foils use the same broad criteria as non-foil cards; curling or foil-specific surface issues can affect the observed condition. | Foil finish and any source-described defect, without recoding the seller label. |
| Manufacturing defects or alterations | TCGplayer says certain defects such as significant miscuts/crimps and alterations such as signatures or stamps are treated as Damaged; photo listings may suit these copies. | Separate standard catalog data from exact-copy description and image. |
| Language | Language is not itself a condition grade and can affect which listing format is used; TCGplayer identifies exceptions for certain non-English products. | Use the full displayed language and product/listing type rather than assuming every language uses the same format. |

## Separate Listings with Photos from standard catalog copies

A standard listing is tied to a catalog product; a Listing with Photos can show a particular copy, a defect or alteration, or a multi-card lot. TCGplayer describes standard-listing price data as a benchmark that may not reflect unique features of the pictured item.

| Photo-listing detail | Why it changes the comparison | Record rule |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Specific copy | Photos and seller description can disclose wear, signature, printing error or another feature absent from a catalog record. | Retain exact-listing evidence separately from catalog product metrics, subject to permission. |
| Lot and quantity | Listings with Photos can offer multiple items; the seller guide calls for the number of products and included contents to be stated. | Do not infer lot size from Current Quantity or a standard card page. |
| Language and condition | Photo-listing instructions call for full language names and condition details, plus damage/modification notes where relevant. | Preserve seller wording; do not normalize away a distinctive item detail. |
| Seller reports | TCGplayer's Price Differential Report excludes photo listings from its Lowest Listing, Last Sold Listing and Market Price comparison. | Apply that exclusion only to the documented seller report; do not imply every page has the same field contract. |

## Seller counts and listed quantity describe different supply signals

TCGplayer defines Current Sellers as individual sellers listing the selected product. Current Quantity is a page metric, and TCGplayer notes that it does not include Listings with Photos that may contain multiple copies. Neither is a complete count of all physical copies or future availability.

| Displayed measure | Definition | Do not infer |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Current Sellers | Individual sellers with a listing for the selected product. | Number of copies, unique physical cards or future fulfillable orders. |
| Current Quantity | Quantity reported for the selected product page under TCGplayer's definition. | All copies in photo listings or lots; TCGplayer identifies this omission. |
| Active listings | Offers currently shown for a selected catalog product and filters. | A completed transaction or complete seller inventory ledger. |
| Recent sales | Source-defined completed-sale metrics for the selected product and filters. | Current inventory or a forecast of future demand. |

## Keep seller scan and inventory records separate from public marketplace data

TCGplayer's Scan & Identify tool is a seller workflow: users import card images, review catalog-match confidence, adjust product attributes and push items to staged or live inventory. Its documentation says imported scan images expire 60 days after import. These account-side records do not define a public listing feed.

| Seller workflow field | Where it belongs | Scope check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Scan image and import sequence | Seller's scan batch and physical-card organization. | Use only within the seller-authorized workflow; an image URL is not a public catalog field. |
| Catalog match and confidence | Seller tool's suggested or manually confirmed link to a catalog product. | Preserve confidence/review state; do not treat a suggested match as an independently verified product. |
| Condition, language and listing price | Seller-adjustable inventory or listing context. | Keep seller settings separate from public marketplace measures and other sellers' offers. |
| Batch and retention | Scan & Identify documentation describes batch management and 60-day scan-image expiration. | Record the source workflow and date; do not assume images remain available indefinitely. |

## Review express permission before automated use

TCGplayer's Terms of Service, updated 27 September 2023, prohibit crawling, scraping or spidering its websites without express permission. Review the actual terms and permission for the proposed use before collecting or reusing data.

| Access path | Posted boundary | Do not assume |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Website pages | Terms of Service require express permission for crawling, scraping or spidering. | Public visibility permits automated collection or commercial reuse. |
| Authorized seller records | Seller Portal and Scan & Identify expose account workflows governed by seller terms and roles. | Private inventory, scan images or pricing settings are a public TCGplayer data feed. |
