## Use ISBN and product URL to key each Waterstones edition

A Waterstones product page describes a purchasable edition or format. Its bibliographic details can include ISBN, publisher, pages, dimensions, weight and language; the Waterstones trade form also uses ISBN/EAN, imprint, format and publication details. Keep these fields at edition level and preserve contributor roles separately.

| Edition field | Record by source URL/ISBN | Do not infer |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Edition key | ISBN/EAN when displayed, exact product URL and edition statement | A single work-level offer shared by hardback, paperback, ebook or other editions. |
| Bibliographic roles | Title/subtitle, author and other named contributors, publisher/imprint, series and language | One undifferentiated author string or a publisher identity inferred from the retailer. |
| Physical format | Binding/format, page count, dimensions and weight when provided | Physical specifications for a different ISBN or edition. |
| Publication state | Publication date and source label such as pre-order, coming soon or unavailable | A pre-order or unavailable listing as in-stock inventory. |

## Keep signed and exclusive editions distinct from standard formats

Waterstones product pages can label a specific edition as signed or exclusive and describe physical features such as sprayed edges, endpapers or designed boards. The reviewed signed-edition page offers a standard edition separately, so the shared work title is not enough to merge the offers.

| Edition evidence | Capture | Comparison rule |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Standard edition | Edition URL/ISBN, format, publisher metadata and visible offer | Do not assume its ISBN, stock state or price matches a special edition. |
| Signed/exclusive copy | Exact badge text, stated signed status and physical design features, tied to the edition URL/ISBN | Treat the retailer's special-edition description as attributed listing evidence, not an independent authenticity guarantee. |
| Same underlying work | Link records by title/work relationship while retaining distinct edition identifiers | Do not collapse separate formats or retailer-exclusive design variants into one sellable item. |
| Pre-order and limits | Pre-order state and any edition-specific purchase limit with an observation date | Do not carry a temporary quantity limit or release state to another edition or later date. |

## Keep Waterstones offers and availability scoped to time and store

Separate the online product offer from publication/dispatch status and the availability of a selected bookshop. Waterstones product pages invite customers to check local Click & Collect availability; a local lookup or reservation is not evidence of stock at every Waterstones shop.

| Observation | Keep together | Boundary |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Online price | Displayed amount, RRP/previous-price label if shown, currency, product URL and capture time | A current offer is not a historic transaction price or a lasting discount. |
| Online availability | Exact state such as available, unavailable, coming soon or dispatch estimate, with observation time | A retailer label or estimated dispatch window is not a completed sale or delivery event. |
| Click & Collect | Selected store identifier, lookup time and exact availability/reservation response | One shop's result is not national stock or a confirmed pickup until the retailer states it. |
| Publication transition | Pre-order state before publication and any later in-stock observation | Do not combine pre-order availability with dispatchable stock. |

## Separate category merchandising, retailer copy and reader reviews

Waterstones category pages combine hierarchy, filters and sort choices; the reviewed popular-science page defaults to “Bestselling.” Treat category order as a time-bound merchandising result, not a sales history. Attribute the retailer's “Waterstones Says” copy, publisher-supplied bibliographic data and reader reviews as separate sources.

| Content layer | Preserve | Interpretation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Category result | Category path, selected filters, sort label and observation date | A bestseller sort is a retailer ordering choice, not a unit-sales count or market-wide ranking. |
| Retailer description | Presence and source label of “Waterstones Says” editorial copy | Keep it distinct from publisher synopsis and avoid reproducing long passages. |
| Publisher data | Publisher/imprint and edition details shown under publisher information | Retain the retailer's source context; check against a publisher or ISBN source if independent verification is needed. |
| Reader review summary | Displayed count, rating context and observation time when relevant | Reviews describe individual reader submissions, not verified technical product specifications; do not republish review text. |
